The Port of Helsinki used pricing strategies to reduce vessel emissions and noise.

Exports showed brisk growth. During January–March, a total of 3.7 million tonnes of cargo was transported via the Port of Helsinki. The growth of export goods transported in containers in particular was immense.

The Port of Helsinki received the Baltic Transport Journal’s Baltic Trendsetters Club Certificate for constructing West Terminal 2. The certificate is awarded to those who change the Baltic Sea region’s transport market with exceptional boldness, persistence and creativity.

Ville Haapasaari started as the new CEO of the Port of Helsinki Ltd. He believes that the most important thing in the operations of the Port of Helsinki is to maintain a good relationship with customers and develop operations in cooperation.

We’re building the future of the port together

West Terminal 2 introduced a two-phased ticket inspection system where tickets are first inspected in the entrance hall and then in the upstairs departure lounge upon embarkation. The passengers can access the departure lounge earlier than before to enjoy the lounge’s café services and take in the spectacular view over the sea.

A new side ramp was completed at the LJ8 ferry berth in the West Harbour, which is used by Eckerö Line. The ramp speeds up the embarkation of passengers travelling by car by as much as 15 minutes.

June

The Port of Helsinki and Tallink hosted the international LNG Conference in Helsinki. The event brought together experts and companies from the rapidly developing industry to discuss current issues.

DB Schenker started conducting deliveries by a freight bicycle in Helsinki. The aim of the trial was to provide solutions to challenges in urban logistics in the congested city centre. The Port of Helsinki provided the local terminal facilities.

Helsinki’s cruise summer was colourful and record-breaking. Almost 520,000 international cruise passengers arrived in Helsinki, which was 8.5% more than the previous summer.

Once again, the Port of Helsinki organised free family events for local residents. Satamahulinat festival in Jätkäsaari attracted a tremendous crowd to enjoy music and tasty street food. The main attractions of Vuosaari Harbour Day were the open ship visits to the vessels of Finnlines, the Finnish Border Guard and the Finnish Navy.

In accordance with its new strategy, the Port set becoming the most functional port in the world as its vision. Business operations were focused on services for ship passengers and cargo transport chains.

Melkki quay of Helsinki’s West Harbour received its last vessel call at the end of September, after which the Port of Helsinki released the area to the City of Helsinki for housing construction.

The construction of the new cruise ship quay at Hernesaari was completed in the autumn. After the final touches, it will be opened for the use of international cruise traffic in spring 2019.

October

The TWIN-PORT 3 project received a total of 21.4 million euros of EU funding. The project will bring several investments to improve the traffic arrangements at West Harbour. Funding was also given for the installation of automatic mooring systems and onshore power supplies, among other things.

The Green Shipping Summit presented the Port of Helsinki with the award for Greenest Port of the Year. The Port came out on top by offering a discount to cruise liners, giving them an incentive to discharge their waste water into Helsinki’s sewer system in the harbour.

According to the Port of Helsinki Port Statistics for January–October, the heaviest growth in international trade had slowed down. The growth of the amount of goods transported in containers in particular had slowed down from the fast pace of the start of the year.

The Port of Helsinki decided to transfer ship services covered by the EU’s Port Services Regulation to a subsidiary company. From 1 January 2019 onwards, South Finland Port Service Ltd is in charge of vessel mooring and unmooring in Helsinki’s harbours.

The Port of Helsinki signed a commitment to join the Climate Partners network of the City of Helsinki and businesses. The Port of Helsinki takes responsibility for its environment and participates in making Helsinki a carbon neutral city.

The West Harbour introduced the new ‘just-in-time’ check-in for heavy traffic. Trucks and lorries will be let into the harbour’s quay area only approximately 2–3 hours before the ship’s departure to await boarding.

The Port of Helsinki decided to steer the growth of truck traffic from urban ports to Vuosaari Harbour by introducing truck charges in urban ports during rush hours and corresponding discounts at Vuosaari Harbour.

Sari Nevanlinna started as VP of passenger services for the Port of Helsinki. Nevanlinna sees the Port playing a key role in the tourism ecosystem.

Building a vibrant and experiential hub

 

The environmental discount offered by the Port of Helsinki reduced the environmental impact of the port area. The Port granted environmental discounts to a total of eight liner traffic vessels.
